St. Luke's Home May Newsletter Tucson Mayor Tours St. Luke's; Meets with Elders Tucson Mayor Jonathan Rothschild visited St. Luke's Home on April 11. CEO L'Don Sawyer led him on a tour of the community, and the Mayor met with Elders at the Town Hall Meeting. Mayor Rothschild has a deep interest in Elder care issues. He has formed the Tucson Healthcare Sector Partnership (THSP) and one of its subcommittees is studying the Elder-care shortage issue in Tucson. St. Luke's Elders had a number of questions for the Mayor with a focus on his plans for expanding senior housing options in Tucson. Mayor Rothschild carefully and thoughtfully answered all questions. St. Luke's Home April Newsletter Dementia Expert Presents to Full House at St. Luke's Home Dr. Nicole Batsch, a noted dementia expert from King's College in London, member of the Alzheimer International Council and a consultant to the World Health Organization, presented to a large and fully engaged audience at St. Luke's Home on March 7. Dr. Batsch discussed the different types of memory-loss that can afflict Elders, and noted that the largest risk factor for memory-related disease is age. While there is no cure and individuals always continue to deteriorate, the goal is to improve the quality of daily life for those suffering from the disease. Diagnosis "takes six month to rule out all possibilities," according to Dr. Batsch, which include Alzheimer's, vascular dementia, Lewy Body dementia and Huntington's disease." Research dollars…

St. Luke's Home March Newsletter St. Luke's Hosts Forums on End-of-Life Planning St. Luke's CEO L'Don Sawyer (pictured above) triggered substantial interest in end-of life planning with her February 15th presentation at the UA Department of Psychology Annual Conference on Successful Aging. With more than 250 attendees, feedback has been strong, and St. Luke's response has been swift. The feedback reflects a fact that Sawyer noted in her presentation: While 60% of people believe that ensuring family members are not burdened with tough end-of-life decisions is "extremely important," a full 56% have not made known their end-of-life wishes. St. Luke’s has served a range of populations-in-need since 1917. As a means of honoring that tradition, the 100th Anniversary Committee has commissioned a new book to capture the vibrant history of St. Luke’s. We need your help to ensure the book’s author, Dave Devine, has access to as much historical information as possible. Devine has already done extensive research through both the Arizona Historical Society and the archives of the Arizona Daily Star. What We Need: Photographs, letters, information, memories or stories about someone who lived, worked or volunteered at St. Luke’s, which might include: A cherished memory about a loved one who, at St. Luke’s, finally found a beautiful and safe place to live. Volunteers Honored at Special Celebration

St. Luke's Home Hosts Volunteer Thanks Event St. Luke's Home hosted a special celebration of the many individuals who donate their time and talent to all the Elders who live in the St. Luke's community. More than 45 volunteers attended the special event, organized by Program and Grants Manager Sally Krommes, who also contributed her artistic talent by creating the bright flowers that hung from the ceiling. The volunteers were warmly welcomed by all of St. Luke's Elders, and were celebrated with piano music presented by Susana Martinez and a special cake created by Culinary Director and Executive Chef Melissa Hernandez. Empty Lot Becomes St. Luke’s Dog Park

Girls Scouts Anna Kirkpatrick, Kennedy Warrilow and Natalie Mak helped paint the new mural Nominated by: Dev Sethi. Why: The trio of ninth-grade students volunteer at St. Luke's Home, an assisted living community for people with limited means. They came up with the idea to turn an empty lot behind the home into a dog park for residents. They sought donations of landscaping, tile work, painting, seating, art and more. They turned the plot into a community space. The park opened last month and its has become a wonderful place for residents, Sethi wrote. "These young ladies have done a wonderful act of kindness for the elderly residents of St. Luke", Sethi wrote.

Pima County's St. Luke's Home Offers Viable Assisted-Living Model For All By L'Don Sawyer Special to the Arizona Daily Star, November 22,2016 Researchers in the United States are taking a hard look at the medical link between loneliness and decreased mobility, depression and early death for Elders. Among the key findings: loneliness is a greater predictor of early death than obesity. According to Dr. Carla M. Perissinotto, geriatrician at the University of California, San Francisco, "The profound effects of loneliness on health and independence are a critical public health problem. It is no longer medically or ethically acceptable to ignore older adults who feel lonely and marginalized."
