Elders' Family and Friends Share Dinner at St. Luke's Nearly 100 people, including Elders and their family and friends, shared a delicious spaghetti dinner at St. Luke's Home on Sunday evening, September 24. The evening offered the opportunity for Elders' to invite those closest to them to share a meal, meet their friends in the St. Luke's community, enjoy great food and a beautiful evening of socializing and fun. Elders relished the opportunity to play host to those they loved. Several invited six or more of their friends and families and proudly introduced them to all. The spaghetti was delicious, conversation flowed, and Elders beamed. "It felt so special," one of them shared, "like hosting my family at a restaurant, a great night out!"

I-PEP Returns to St. Luke's Home The Geriatric Inter-Professional Education and Practice Program (I-PEP) Screening Clinic launched its 2017-2018 programs on September 9th with a clinic on Healthy Eating. I-PEP was created in partnership with the Arizona Health Sciences Center and the Arizona Center on Aging. It brings students from UA's nursing, pharmacy, public health and medical colleges to St. Luke's for monthly clinics and educational presentations.

Everybody Loves Michael! Michael Mongan's (front row above) leads exercise class every Tuesday and Wednesday evenings at 6:30 at St. Luke's Home. The Elders range in age from 61 to 95 and include the five women pictured above, all over the age of 90. Each Elder brings their own weights and begin showing up early to nab a chair. It is is obvious the Elders love the class and take their exercise seriously! Michael started volunteering at St. Luke's in 2009 as a weekend landscaping volunteer. He explained, "The 'walker brigade,' as I respectfully called them, would come out individually or in packs to sit in the courtyard and watch me weed and trim.   St. Luke's Home September Newsletter     UA Students Return to St. Luke's Home  The University of Arizona is back in session and that means UA students  have returned to St. Luke's Home as part of several different programs offered through the UA-St. Luke's Home partnership. Elder Sleep Study: Fourth-year pharmacy students Kimberly Sassenrath (pictured above left) and Sandy Lee will be part of a team of students on a Sleep Research Project and Study for St. Luke's Elders this fall. Lead Investigator is Jeannie Lee, PhamD, BCPS, FASHP.  The proposed study was presented to the Elders at the August Town Hall meeting at St. Luke's. St. Luke's Home August Newsletter   Med-Start Program at St. Luke's Changes Lives   Rodrigo Valenzuela-Cordova (pictured above with St. Luke's CEO L'Don Sawyer), is a Tucson native and  senior at the University of Arizona. He is pre-med majoring in Public Health, and this summer, he returned to the Med-Start Health Careers program at St. Luke's as the Lead Counselor. The immersive Med-Start program, run through the College of Medicine and sponsored by the UA Office of Diversity, is a residential program that houses all student participants in a UA residence hall. It provides the students, all of whom are high school students heading into their senior years, first-hand experience with careers in health care including medicine, nursing, public health, and pharmacy.   St. Luke's Home July Newsletter Three Generations of Family Support for St. Luke's Home  Sadie Smith (pictured on the left with St. Luke's Elder/volunteer Lois), is not only one of St. Luke's Home newest volunteers, she also is the third generation in her family to support the Elders at St. Luke's Home. Sadie, who will enter the 10th grade in August at Basis Tucson North, first came to St. Luke's at the age of five with her Aunt Leenie (also known as Eileen Starace) and Eileen's mother, Margaret, for Wii bowling. Eileen is a member of the Board of Visitors (BOV) Committee and co-chaired the Baile and Margaret, now deceased, was also a BOV member. And that's not all. St. Luke's Home June Newsletter St. Luke's Home Remembers St. Luke's Home hosted a special Memorial Day Remembrance Celebration in honor of all soldiers who have died for the nation, and with special recognition of  the many St. Luke's Elders who served. Steve Aguirre, Membership Director of American Legion Post 59, presided over a flag-raising ceremony. Also joining the event were the American Legion Riders, a motorcycle group of Veterans. In his remarks, Aguirre offered his gratitude to all the men and women who lost their lives in the war, and offered his respect to the Elders for any loved ones they lost. Aguirre also invited Elders to share their memories of family members and friends they lost to war. The remembrance also included patriotic songs, sung by all, followed by a fried chicken feast.   Med-Start Summer Program Runs…
