Tucson Mayor Rothschild Visits St. Luke's Home Tucson Mayor Jonathan Rothschild visited St. Luke's Home on April 11. CEO L'Don Sawyer led him on a full tour of the community and the Mayor met with Elders at the Town Hall Meeting. The Elders had a number of questions for the Mayor with a focus on his plans for expanding senior housing options in Tucson. Mayor Rothschild carefully and thoughtfully answered all questions. He provided a full explanation of the range of housing options available and how the city funds services. He also offered an overview of the city's efforts to bring more jobs into Tucson, and described current efforts to raise the sales tax to provide additional revenue for road repair. Pima County's St. Luke's Home Offers Viable Assisted-Living Model For All By L'Don Sawyer Special to the Arizona Daily Star, November 22,2016 Researchers in the United States are taking a hard look at the medical link between loneliness and decreased mobility, depression and early death for Elders. Among the key findings: loneliness is a greater predictor of early death than obesity. According to Dr. Carla M. Perissinotto, geriatrician at the University of California, San Francisco, "The profound effects of loneliness on health and independence are a critical public health problem. Join us for a very special dedication of the beautiful new mural that was painted by local Girl Scouts from Troop 640 for the enjoyment of all the Elders at St. Luke's Home. The dedication will take place on Sunday, November 20th, from 2:00 PM - 3:00 PM in the back garden at St. Luke's Home.  The sky blue mural covers two walls in the back garden and features bright flowers, butterflies and dogs. Days of Care Volunteers Make St. Luke's Sparkle

Employees from Comcast, BBVA Compass and Rosemont Copper's Hudbay Project spent the day at St. Luke's Home on October 19 volunteering their services on a range of projects as part of the United Way's Days of Care. Their work involved painting  four rooms, including the parlor,med rooms and alcove, washing windows around the entire perimeter, and scraping rust off the wrought iron outside the chapel. Sandi Acuna, team leader for BBVA Compass, has been with her company for 17 years and has volunteered every year for Days of Care. She is the executive assistant to BBVA's CEO and also has a special connection with St. Luke's Home. Sandi's husband's grandfather was treated at St. Luke's many years ago when it was a tuberculosis hospital. Sandi's team of eight volunteers painted three rooms.…

  The Arizona State Legislature passed a new law in 2016 that doubles the tax credit donation for non-profits like St. Luke's that serve low income families. For 2016, a married couple can donate up to $800 and an individual can now donate up to $400 and receive the Arizona Charitable Tax Credit. And, if you do not itemize, you can still participate. This donation can be made in addition to any contributions to a school or veteran's group.  In other words, you can now significantly expand your ability to designate where your tax money is spent.
